2019 NE Manion Cup: Midterm simply outstays them

3 minute read

Only second up at a mile and a half, the beautifully bred Midterm scored a tough win in the 2019 NE Manion Cup at Rosehill on Saturday.

Midterm is by Galileo out of a grand mare in Midday and he won courtesy of a great Jamie Kah ride.

Winning Trainer: Liam Howley (co-owner Nick Williams interviewed)

On the win: “It’s a real credit to all the team up there at Macedon and Liam’s done a good job with this horse. We’ve had him a while, he just hadn’t had a lot of luck since we’ve had him. He’s run a lot of placings but hadn’t got his nose in front.”

On the ride: “Jamie rode him beautifully today, gave him every chance. It was just a beautiful staying ride. She would’ve looked at home at Royal Ascot the way she rode that horse.”

On the riding instructions: “She was just asked to get him into a rhythm and make the horse happy, then from the 1000m start improving and see what happens. She did a great job and the horse obviously relished the ground.”

On his next target: “Hopefully he pulls up okay and we can head back into the big city for the Sydney Cup.”

Winning Jockey: Jamie Kah

On running here: “I’m so rapt. Harlem was supposed to run here today, but unfortunately he didn’t accept, but I picked up the ride on this beautiful horse and the race couldn’t have gone better to plan in the end. What a tough little horse he is.

On the tactics: “I had a good talk to Team Williams and they wanted this horse to run along at a decent clip. Once we got to the 1000m I wasn’t going to be waiting for them. I knew this horse was fit and could rattle off those times, and he was just too strong late. He was actually getting stronger and stronger to the line.”

On the win: “What a tough horse, he hit a bit of a flat spot, but on the line he was the strongest he was in the race, really impressive.”

Beaten Jockeys:

Brenton Avdulla (Big Duke): “He ran terrific, just found one better, third up at 2400m just told a bit late.”

Mark Zahra (Jaameh): “Needs further.”

Tommy Berry (One Foot In Heaven): “Another good run, we had to get too far back from the gate, but he hit the line strong.”

Blake Shinn (Vin De Dance): “Didn’t have the best run from a bad draw, put a line through it.”

Opie Bosson (Zacada): “Enjoyed a beautiful run, but had nothing turning for home.”

Jay Ford (Big Blue): “He travelled well throughout, fitness told that last 600m.”

James McDonald (Casterton): “Good run, he’s on track.”

Hugh Bowman (Etymology): “I think he found the mile and a half a bit far on that testing ground.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Shraaoh): “Just the ground went a bit against him today, he’s got a better finish than that.”

Sam Clipperton (Rodrico): “Disappointing.”

Jason Collett (Doukhan): “A bit one-paced, but kept coming.”
