It is hard to know who is in front but the 2019 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (1000m) at Longchamp on Sunday will be a great race. Battaash did the job by panels two years back.

2019 PRIX DE L'ABBAYE DE LONGCHAMP - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions for two year olds and up at Longchamp conducted by France Galop.

The Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp is run over 1000m. It was first run in 1957 and was won by Texana.

It was brought in to celebrate the centenary of Longchamp in 1957. The Prix du Moulin, now run earlier in the year, was the other race in its honour.

It is run on a straight course up the back straight at Longchamp and run in the opposite direction of the course.

The Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp has always been at 1000m and was a Group 2 when grading starting before becoming a Group 1 in 1976. Geldings were allowed from 2001.

In 2008, Eastern European sprinter Overdose won the Abbaye but there was a false start and the race was voided due to a non-opening gate. He did not participate in the re-run at the end of the day won by Marchand d'Or.

The Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp is run on Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe day.

Four horses have won the race twice – Texanita, Gentilhombre, Committed, Lochsong.

The 2016 and 2017 editions were run at Chantilly as Longchamp was under its long term redevelopment.

Yves Saint-Martin won the race five times as a jockey while leading trainer sits with Francois Mathet with eight victories.

The last non-French winner was Mabs Cross in 2018 for Michael Dods.

The Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp is worth €350,000 in 2019.

Notable winners of the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp include Battaash (2017), Marsha (2016), Marchand d'Or (2008), Continent (2002), Agnes World (1999), Lochsong (1993/1994), Mr Brooks (1992), Dayjur (1990), Committed (1984/1985), Habibti (1983), Sharpo (1982), Marwell (1981), Moorestyle (1980), Double Form (1979), Gentilhombre (1976/1977), Sandford Lad (1973), Deep Diver (1972) and Texanita (1963/1964).
