McEvoy And Lane Share Caulfield Spoils

Kerrin McEvoy and Damian Lane shared the $50,000 prize in the second round of the Melbourne spring carnival's Star of the Saddle at Caulfield on Saturday.

Both riders amassed eight points to split the $50,000 pot, They edged out Mark Zahra, who won two G1 races on the day but finished with only six points.

McEvoy landed a winning double in the G3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes on California Zimbol and the G2 Schillaci Stakes on Trekking and added minor placings on Groundswell and Age Of Chivalry in two of the G1 features.

Lane landed the G2 Herbert Power Stakes on The Chosen One and also secured points aboard placegetters Missile Mantra, The Bostonian and Loving Gaby.

The Star of the Saddle prize, awarded to the leading riders on each day of the Melbourne carnival, increases to $100,000 for next Saturday's Caulfield Cup program.

Meanwhile the veteran Black Heart Bart has claimed his second New Zealand Bloodstock Caulfield WFA Championship with his second placing in Saturday's $1 million Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

The Lindsey Smith-trained marvel finishes with a total of 19 points, five clear of Hartnell. Mystic Journey, Scales of Justice and Cape of Good Hope tied for third with 10 points each.

The remarkable 9YO won his first NZB Caulfield WFA Championship title in the spring of 2016 when he won the G1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) and G1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

He has made a great comeback this spring winning the Underwood Stakes for a second time as 100/1 chance and following it up with a gallant second in Saturday's Caulfield Stakes when he was beaten in a photo finish by Cape Of Good Hope.

Black Heart Bart Black Heart Bart is a six-time G1 winner, having also won the G1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m) in 2016 and the G1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) and G1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) in 2017.

The Futurity Stakes was his last win for more than two years as he was virtually retired in the spring of 2018.
