2020 PJ BELL STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The PJ Bell Stakes a Group 3 race for three-year-old fillies conducted by the Australian Turf Club at Royal Randwick.

The PJ Bell Stakes was first run in 1985 as the Analie Handicap when it was named after the champion mare who won the Doncaster Handicap and AJC Oaks at Randwick.

The race was renamed the PJ Bell Handicap in 1995 in honour of the PJ (Jim) Bell, who served as chairman of the AJC from 1983 to 1992.

The PJ Bell Stakes has been run under set weights with penalties since 2011. From 1985 until 2013 the Analie Handicap/PJ Bell Stakes was a Listed race. It has been Group 3 since 2014.

The PJ Bell Stakes was run at Canterbury from 2011-2013 and has been run at Randwick since 2014.

Some grand fillies have used this to go onto bigger things, especially in the Brisbane carnival. Private Steer and Dane Ripper are a couple.

The 2020 PJ Bell Stakes was run over 1200m at Randwick on the first day of The Championships for prizemoney of $200,000.
