2021 CANONBURY STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Canonbury Stakes is a Group 3 race for two year old colts and geldings conducted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill.

The Canonbury Stakes was first run in 1930 and was won by Lightning March. The race used to be run at the start of the two year old season but was moved closer to the Golden Slipper.

The Canonbury Stakes is run over 1100m under Set Weights And Penalties conditions. It was worth $160,000 in 2021.

Originally a Listed race, it became a Group 3 from 2015 onwards.

The Canonbury Stakes has been variously run at Randwick, Rosehill and Warwick Farm. Has been at Rosehill since 2013 (held at Randwick in 2020 due to oppressive conditions out west).

Vancouver used it in his Golden Slipper preparation. Sebring did same in the EI affected season.
