2021 PRIX GANAY - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Prix Ganay is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions for four year olds and up usually at Longchamp conducted by France Galop.

The Prix Ganay is run over 2100m. It was first run in 1889 and was won by Acheron.

The Prix Ganay was originally known as the Prix des Sablons at 2000m and wasn't held during WWI.

Waldgeist wins the Group 1 Prix Ganay

Named after Jean de Ganay, it was a Group 1 from the 1971 outset of the grading system.

It is an early season guide to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Grand French horse Cirrus des Aigles won on three occasions in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

When Longchamp was out of action for its huge redevelopment, the race was run at Saint-Cloud in 2016 and 2017.

Most wins as a jockey is by Yves Saint-Martin with six while leading trainer was shared with five wins. They were Harry Count, Geoffroy Watson, Alain de Royer-Dupre and Andre Fabre until Fabre made it six with Waldgeist in 2019.

Christophe Soumillon has won 5 of the last 14 runnings of the race.

Waldgeist won the Ganay in 2019 and at the end of the season won a famous Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe beating Enable in the last furlong. Sottsass did the same double in 2020.

It was run at Chantilly in 2020 due to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

The last non-French winner was Cracksman in 2018 for John Gosden. Before him it was Duke Of Marmalade in 2008.

The Prix Ganay was worth €300,000 in 2021.
