After a series of minor placings, Parry Sound gets an ideal chance to return to the winner’s list in the Winter Cup.
Bjorn Baker is always happy to look out for a fellow New Zealander, so he has no qualms accommodating visiting Victorian stayer Inverloch for Kiwi-born trainer Trent Busuttin.
But given the last-start Wagga Cup winner will be going head-to-head with Baker's Parry Sound in Saturday's Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill, he says his hospitality can only extend so far.
"He's coming up from Trent Busuttin's and staying with me. He won't get fed though," Baker quipped.
Inverloch will be aiming to become the first Victorian-trained horse to win the Winter Cup since Gallic Chieftan scored for Darren Weir four years ago, while as the pre-race favourite, Parry Sound will be the main flagbearer for the locals.
The five-year-old has been a model of consistency, placing at his past three starts, including the latest when second to in-form mare Polly Grey in the Lord Mayors Cup (2000m).
He also has an excellent record at the journey with a win and two placings from five 2400m runs.
"He's been going really well and he has improved throughout the prep," Baker said.
"He was probably unlucky to run into one of the form horses of the autumn/winter in Polly Grey so I thought his last run was an excellent. The 24 should suit, he's a very relaxed customer.
"He's a pleasure to have around and I'd love to win the race."
Parry Sound was a $3.80 favourite on Thursday, ahead of Knights Order ($4) and Stockman ($5).
With 60kg, Inverloch will need to set a weight-carrying record to win and is regarded as a $10 chance.
The race has attracted a capacity field of 14, including defending titleholder winner Wu Gok ($9.50), along with New Zealand raider and last-start Rotorua Cup winner The Good Fight ($15).
