Marway demolishes rivals to win Town Plate

Sydney-trained sprinter Marway has scored his most important win to date, making a one-act affair of the Wagga Town Plate.

Apprentice Tom Sherry headed to the opening day of the Wagga racing carnival for one ride and he made the most of the opportunity to land a brilliant Town Plate victory aboard Marway for boss Mark Newnham

Capitalising on an inside draw, Sherry controlled the race from the front and Marway ($2.90 fav) extended his advantage in the straight to thump his rivals by four lengths.

Classy Canberra sprinter Handle The Truth ($10) made good ground from the back for second with Jailbreak ($26) nudging out last year's Town Plate winner Irish Songs to grab third.

Having begun his career in North Queensland before transferring to Newnham at the start of the year, Marway has now won four of his six starts for his new trainer and Sherry expects there are more in store.

"He is building himself a really nice record now and hopefully he can keep going through his grades and pick up a nice cheque at the end of the season," Sherry told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"You know you've got a good horse when they maintain that high cruising speed and show a good kick off it. He has a great turn of foot off a high speed and that's what's going to win him races.

"There's plenty of races for these sprinters about and the boss is magical at picking them out."

The victory gave Newnham his first win in the $200,000 country sprint and he will attempt to parlay that form into the second day of the Murrumbidgee Turf Club's showcase carnival when he starts Spirit Ridge in Friday's Wagga Cup with Nash Rawiller to ride.
