2021 STRICKLAND STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Strickland Stakes is a Group 3 race conducted the Western Australian Turf Club at Belmont Park racecourse in Perth.

The Strickland Stakes is one of Perth's historic weight-for-age races dating from 1901 when it was run at Ascot as the December Stakes.

The race remained at Ascot and was moved to November and held in that month until 1998. The race was not run in 1942-1944 and 1999.

In 2000 the Strickland Stakes was run in January and in 2002 it was moved to April. The race remained at Ascot from 1901-2010 when the exception of 2005 when it was run at Belmont Park.

Since 2011 the Strickland Stakes has been run in June at Belmont Park over 2000m.

The Strickland Stakes has been a Group 3 race since 1979.

It is the third leg of the Winter series of races at Belmont including the Belmont Sprint and Hyperion Stakes. Material Man won the treble in 2018.

Railway winner Galaxy Star won the Belmont Sprint and also the Strickland Stakes during the Winter carnival.

The 2021 Strickland Stakes was run for prizemoney of $200,000.

There have been 9 dual winners of the Strickland Stakes, the most recent being Material Man in 2018 & 2020.
