Byrne Burke aiming to end season on a high

3 minute read

In-form apprentice Erica Byrne Burke has been riding the crest of a wave these past two months and she looks set to finish the season off with multiple winners in Hobart on Sunday.

Erica Byrne Burke began riding in May and from 39 rides she has amassed 13 wins for a strike rate of 33 per cent.

On Sunday she again teams up with the Scott Brunton stable for four of her five rides at the meeting.

Her first ride is aboard the Graeme Mcculloch-trained Galway Girl and the mare looks ideally placed given her recent form that comprises seconds at her past two starts in the same grade in Devonport.

Brunton has accepted with 27 horses for the eight-race card and has multiple winning chances in each of the eight races and Byrne Burke is aboard four genuine hopes.

Byrne Burke's first for Brunton arrives in race five with Kuroset, aboard whom the apprentice has won twice from as many outings this time in, and this benchmark 66 handicap over 1200m looks very winnable.

Her past two wins have been in 0-66 events over 1100m and 1200m and she meets much the same opposition as she has at her first two outings this preparation.

With Byrne Burke's three-kilogram claim, the mare will lug 56.5kg and rises only 1.5kg for having won comfortably last start.

The mare goes up against stablemate Brinktop Lad that also is aiming for a hat-trick of wins, and he has drawn ideally in gate one, while Kuroset will start from barrier 10 in the 12-horse field.

Byrne Burke jumps aboard Robben Island in the class 1 over 1400m and the mare would only need to carry her last start form into the race to be very competitive.

Robben Island was ridden into third place by Byrne Burke last start in a class 1 (1200m) and knowing the mare's quirks should enhance her chances.

Byrne Burke jumps aboard Shampz Again for the first time and the gelding will appreciate the apprentice's three-kilogram claim.

The talented apprentice closes the meeting aboard Irish Shotgun that Byrne Burke partnered to a dead-heat for first at the last Hobart meeting.

Irish Shotgun is in the right race as he was joint winner over the same trip and in the same grade as his last start.
