Grey pair set to fly in the wet

3 minute read

There’s a saying in racing “always back a grey in the wet” and many punters will be following that philosophy in Launceston on Wednesday night.

In Brief

  • Romary and Sir Simon firm favourites on Wednesday night.
  • $3,500 buy a shrewd purchase.
  • Sir Simon a noted wet tracker.

Between 8-15mm of rain is forecast to hit Launceston from the middle of the afternoon through to the late evening which would have an impact on the track for the nine-race program given the first race is scheduled for 17:20.

Four-year-old grey mare Romary has a win on a soft track last start in Hobart which came off the back of an eye catching second in Launceston at her Tasmanian debut on 6 October.

Trainer John Luttrell secured the bargain buy for just $3,500 and the horse has returned that in spades winning over $17,000 in prize money in her two runs for the stable.

"I like the breed and I like grey horses," said John Lutrell with a smile following Romary's win over 1430m in Hobart on 21 October.

The daughter of Puissaince De Lune and Marion Type hasn't been tested past 1400m in her five-start career but that hasn't stopped punters backing her from $3 into $2.45 on race morning for the The Advocate Mdn/cl1 over 1600m.

"She's a pretty versatile horse and can really gallop," Luttrell said.

Another grey horse is expected to anchor many quaddies in Launceston when Sir Simon starts a short favourite in the Georgetown News Xpress Open Hcp (1400m).

The eight-year-old has four wins from seven starts on soft or heavy tracks and the scratching of Deroche from the race has seen Sir Simon shortened to $1.50 with bookmakers.

His last start win at the same track and distance was franked with Overplay coming from well down the track to win last Wednesday night, and with a 5kg weight drop for Wednesday's assignment, it really does look Sir Simon's race to lose.

Matt Reid will be live hosting full mounting yard coverage of the Wednesday night program on TasracingTV, while Sky Thoroughbred Central will broadcast the final five races with Peter Staples trackside.
