2022 KINGSFORD-SMITH CUP - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Kingsford-Smith Cup is a Group 1 race for the sprinters conducted by the Brisbane Racing Club.

It is back at Eagle Farm after the redevelopment.

The Kingsford-Smith Cup was first run in 1964 and was won by Rashlore. It has been known under many names previously but is registered as the BTC Cup.

The Kingsford-Smith Cup is now run over 1300m under Weight For Age conditions. It has been run over varying distances but was 1200m from 1991 onwards.

For the 2017 running it swapped positions with the Doomben 10000 as the middle pin of the Brisbane Winter Sprint Triple Crown.

The first running of the Kingsford-Smith Cup (BTC Cup) as a G1 was in 2006 won by Gee I Jane.

In the last 22 years only four fillies/mares have won. They are Staging (1999), Gee I Jane (2006), Black Caviar (2011) and Sea Siren (2012).

In 2013 the race was switched to Eagle Farm to try and attract Black Caviar but she was retired after her TJ Smith win.

Apache Cat broke a string of beaten favs. Rough results have still been prevalent since then.

The Bostonian made it five wins from five starts in Queensland including 2 x G1s in 2019.

The 2020 edition of the Kingsford-Smith Cup was cancelled due to the coronavirus.

Vega One's win in 2021 was under Jamie Kah as she became the winningest Australian female rider in G1s with her sixth.

It is worth $700,000 in 2022.

Notable winners of the Kingsford-Smith Cup include Eye Liner (1967), Cabochon (1970), Triton (1973), Tontonan (1974), Strawberry Road (1983), St Jude (1991), Buck's Pride (1993/1994), Chief De Beers (1996), Accomplice (1997), General Nediym (1998), Falvelon (2000), Thorn Park (2004), Bentley Biscuit (2007), Apache Cat (2008), Black Caviar (2011), Impending (2018) and The Bostonian (2019).
