Yarra Master lucky to be alive

If Yarra Master lives up to expectations and wins a feature staying race, it will not only be the result of a great training feat by Scott Brunton.

In Brief

  • Quick action by farm hand Molly Cornish saved Yarra Master's life.
  • Brunton has been careful not to rush the son of Mawingo.
  • Travelling Gigolo looks set to travel interstate in search of staying races.

Yarra Master was bred by Mandy Gunn at Motree Thoroughbreds and it was an incident soon after he was born that was the difference between life and death.

"When this horse was born the placenta was wrapped around its face and he couldn't breathe but one of my assistants Molly Cornish rushed in and removed it (placenta) and saved his life," Gunn said.

"It was such quick thinking and we were and are all grateful, so Molly got to name him.

"Obviously we have watched him grow from a foal to where he is today and if Scott (Brunton) is right we might have a future cups horse on our hands," Mandy said.

Brunton trained the quadrella on Sunday leading in the last four winners on the eight-event card to take his meeting tally to five wins.

Two of those were potential cups prospects in Yarra Master and Travelling Gigolo.

Yarra Master made it two wins in succession over 1430m on the Hobart track and Brunton is keen to see what the gelded son of Mawingo can do over more ground.

"Yarra Master is a very nice horse that shows good staying potential, but we've been careful not to rush him," Brunton said.

"I'll eventually put him over 1600m and then we'll see how he goes over 2100m and if he can stay then the connections have a cups prospect on their hands."

Travelling Gigolo is likely to venture to Victoria for his next start.

"This was Travelling Gigolo's second win over 2100m and there's not a lot for him here, so we'll look for a race for him across the water," Brunton said.
