Baker making an impact on Tassie riding ranks

3 minute read

Apprentice Chelsea Baker has only been riding in races since March, but the former star soccer player-turned jockey has taken to the caper like a duck to water.

Chelsea Baker took a while to notch her first winner but once the ice was broken, she has had an avalanche of winners to have her just outside the top 10 on the state jockeys' premiership table.

The talented hoop has accrued 21 winners that sees her lose her three-kilogram claim, but even with only a two-kilogram claim trainers will be jumping out of trees to put her on.

Baker landed a double in Hobart last Sunday winning aboard Kuroset for Scott Brunton and Captain Dave for her father, Barry Baker.

Kuroset ended another good day at the office for trainer Scott Brunton who prepared a treble.

Kuroset was heavily backed to start the $2.80 favourite in a benchmark 76 handicap over 1100 metres in which the mare powered home late to notch her second win from her past three starts.

It was the second leg of Baker's double with her first coming aboard Captain Dave.

Captain Dave had been searching for a heavy track this preparation and found one to his liking last Sunday, leading throughout to score an emphatic win in a class one handicap over 1390 metres.

"Dave really appreciated the track conditions, and he was really strong at the end," Baker said.

The talented apprentice only started riding in March and has already notched 21 winners from 119 rides for a winning strike rate of 17.6 per cent.

"Everything is going well at the moment and I'm learning all the time," Baker said.
