Romary tunes up for return to racing

3 minute read

TALENTED mare Romary tuned up for her return to racing with a narrow but impressive trial win at Elwick on Monday.

Romary looked in great fettle as she cruised over the 800-metre trial alongside talented four-year-old Algernon with only a half-head separating them on the line and she will take that form into an open handicap over 1400m in Launceston on Sunday.

The John Luttrell-trained great mare has not started since she scored an effortless win in a benchmark 68 handicap in Launceston in mid-April.

She has won six of her 10 starts for Luttrell, who says she is the best he has in his stable and could head interstate, depending on what she does on Sunday.

"There isn't much for her here in Tassie after Sunday's race so we might have to look at taking her to Melbourne for a run or two," Luttrell said.

Algernon also trialled well and could have won had his rider, Daniel Ganderton, so desired.

The open handicap in Launceston on Sunday promises to be an interesting race if all the nominees accept with last season's Horse of the Year Newhart and this season's Vamos Stakes winner Take the Sit amongst the 10 nominations.
