Brisbane Best: Doomben – 7th December 2019

3 minute read

Class can rise to the top at Doomben on Saturday with a couple of smart gallopers well placed in winnable races.

The first of those is Queensland favourite The Candy Man in the TAB Brisbane Handicap (1600m).

The popular grey struggled to find his best over the Sydney spring carnival but relished his return to the sunshine state with a dominant 2.8L win over this distance at Caloundra last start.

The Candy Man ran on powerfully from midfield on that occasion and drew clear like a horse that is right back to his best.

The win was his second in three attempts at the mile – the unplaced effort coming in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap – and he will love the return to Doomben, a course where he is unbeaten in three appearances.

Jockey Matthew McGillivray sticks with him after guiding him for the first time last start and the pair should secure an ideal run in transit from the low draw.

A massive drop in grade sees Snitch placed to win the BRC Christmas Movies R1MW Handicap (1350m) earlier in the program.

The gelding's two runs since a spell have both comes at Listed level so the step back to a one-metro-win race is a significant one.

Snitch's latest performance in the Recognition Stakes had merit when he raced wide throughout but boxed on to finish 3L away at this course and distance.

The class drop means a jump in the weights but the 3kg claim of apprentice Nicholas Keal sees him well handicapped.

Snitch has a win and two placings from three previous third-up attempts so looks set to peak and win.
