Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for July 18.
Australian thoroughbred meetings today are held at Scone, Pakenham, Sunshine Coast, Warracknabeal, Port Augusta, Narrandera, Carnarvon, Devonport and Alice Springs.
SCONE: RACE 4 @ 1:55PM
SARANDOS (5) has been thereabouts without saluting but strikes a winnable race here. Ran a handy second at Wyong first-up before being slightly disappointing at Newcastle last time out. Strips fitter third-up from the spell and can be right in it for a long way. Hard to catch. A TENDER LADY (7) has placed two from three this time in and can earn another cheque. MISS KINGSTON (8) returned in fine fashion with a close-up second here and is a massive watch second run for the new stable. SQUEEAK (6) has shown enough at the trials to warrant respect in this line-up. In the mix. SELECTIONS: Sarandos to win.

SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 7 @ 4:55 PM
Highland Son (6) is promising and resumes off a solid trial at Eagle Farm has won 2/3 and never missed a place. Gets a handy claim and may have an edge on these. LEADERSHIP SPILL (1) resumes and has switched from the Tony Gollan barn to Lee Freedman. The speedy galloper brings strong figures and looked sharp in the recent Gold Coast trial. Has won 3/4 fresh and is a serious player. BOINGO (2) went to Eagle Farm off nondescript efforts in the bush and was just knocked off at 200-1 in stronger than this. Came hard and he has to be considered keeping the handy 3kg claim. NIGHT EXPRESS (7) is a former Victorian resuming for the leading local stable with the top hoop riding off a low gate. The fresh form is good and keep very safe. SELECTIONS: Backing Highland Son.
WARRACKNABEAL: RACE 4 @ 2:55PM
APOLOGETIC (3) has been good both runs back and has more up the sleeve. He can use the low barrier and goes in all conditions. Bowditch replaces the apprentice and the gelding will take beating. JUST STELLAR (8) missed a lip here on the heavy 15 days ago. Mixes the form but he'd go close with a repeat of that and a 5x winning rider is reunited. THE PRES (6) has raced and Group level but has been struggling for form. The yard and a good record at this track and improvement wouldn't surprise with Newitt going on. GALAXY PIRATE (4) has had one blip in a string of good efforts. Needs a good ride but can't be ruled out. SELECTIONS: Backing Apologetic to win.
PAKENHAM: RACE 2 @ 12:40PM
Import LIGHT PILLAR (3) looks well placed to make a winning debut over the obstacles. He's trialled nicely in preparation and he has superior flat form to his rivals in this race having been competitive at city midweek level in the recent past. He's easy to like. PUEBLO (7) has a poor winning strike rate but has shown promise over Hurdles in two runs to date. With further improvement here he can figure in the finish. ZOFFANY ROCKET (9) is a consistent type who looks a must for multiples. MIGHTY OASIS (6) on debut over obstacles will likely make his own luck on speed and could give a sight for a long way. SELECTIONS: Light Pillar looks hard to beat.
CARNARVON: RACE 4 @ 3:45PM
MYSTICAL MAN (2) was slow off heavily-backed and then the money came again and he delivered the Maiden by 6L this distance. Lightly-raced and can go right on with it. SHIVERS OF JOY (9) has been tracking well before the latest when caught wide from a cruel barrier. Can race handier and 2kg claimer goes on. LIKE HIM A BIT (6) is busting to win and the wide barrier was against him last time. He's also a chance. BIG SWOOP (1) won the Maiden comfortably and keeps improving. Uses the paint and can make the finish. SELECTIONS: Backing Mystical Man.
ALICE SPRINGS: RACE 1 @ 2:24PM
EXTRACTION (5) has won three of the last four holding the form. Keeps a leading hoop and gets weight relief. Draws to advantage and can go on with it. CYCLONITE (1) led and won the 76 turning the form around. Gets a weight hike but can get into the finish. ALVIN PURPLE (4) placed behind the above but was even better winning and placing the two prior. He also has claims. TOFFIATO (3) was just nudged out in the same contest and will be coming hard again. SELECTIONS: Backing Extraction.
