Monza win extends Piastri's F2 series lead

A breakthrough Sunday race win for Australia's Oscar Piastri at Monza has extended the young gun's lead in the 2021 Formula 2 championship.

Australian young gun Oscar Piastri is one step closer to sealing the Formula 2 title in his maiden season after a breakthrough Sunday race win at Monza.

After failing to capitalise on pole position in the Sunday feature race at Silverstone in the previous round, Piastri made amends in Italy, holding off China's Guanyu Zhou in the 30-lap race.

The victory means Piastri holds a 15-point advantage over Zhou with three rounds of the championship remaining.

Piastri had finished fourth and seventh in Saturday's sprint races, which carry less points that the Sunday event.

It's the second race win of the year for the 20-year-old Melbourne-product, who is rapidly being considered for a Formula 1 drive after his impressive transition from winning last year's Formula 3 title to the F2 circuit.

"It feels awesome," Piastri said.

"It's another box ticked off in my rookie year, so I am very happy."

The championship's next stop is in a fortnight at Sochi, Russia, where Piastri and Zhou will again be the focus of attention.
