Sydney Specials: Randwick – January 14

A pair of runners each third up from a spell look poised to produce big runs at Randwick on Saturday.

Picture: Racing and Sports

The first comes early in the program with Raiment contesting the #theraces Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m).

Raiment was an impressive first up winner and then strong last start when a slender second over this class and distance at Canterbury a fortnight ago.

The daughter of Street Cry was unlucky not to have won, held up in the straight at a crucial point.

She found the line well late when clear and only missed out in a head bobber.

With even luck in the straight on Saturday, Raiment should take beating.

She will be fitter third up and in a race lacking much in terms of early speed, the three-year-old under James Doyle should enjoy a favourable run, settled somewhere in the first few.

The filly has returned from an excellent two-year-old season in great order and can continue to build on her already solid record.

Hand From Above has a sense of timing third run from a spell in the Hyland Race Colours Benchmark 78 Handicap (1600m).

The More Than Ready gelding has commenced his latest campaign with a pair of closing efforts at Rosehill over sprint trips.

He was charging home late for a slender second to Louie Sea Kay three weeks ago over 1350m and should now be ready for the Randwick mile third up.

The gelding possesses a solid 1600m record, with his last win coming at Warwick Farm over the mile late last season.

Nick Heywood takes 3kg off his back which will see the four-year-old carry no deadweight.

While settled back in the field both runs so far this campaign, expect Hand From Above to be positioned more prominently up to a mile.

Classic Uniform and Dark Eyes drawn the inside will work forward and set up a solid tempo so even if Hand From Above does again settle back, there looks to be enough pace up front in which he can rattle home off.

Markets suggest the final event of the day at Randwick is an open one with it being each way the field.

It is Hand From Above who arguably brings the strongest profile into the contest.
