It's one of the biggest days on the Australian racing calendar and Caulfield Guineas Day is the highlight in Melbourne - and what a highlight it is.
The two Guineas are both crackers and we're keen to bet in both.
On a huge day where the handicaps are all deep betting contests loaded with chances plenty are going to be reaching for a high-percentage winner, and the one that most are going to land on is The Autumn Sun in the Guineas.
Ordinarily we'd be looking to avoid that sort of high-profile obvious favourite but The Autumn Sun is well fancied to give the punters a treat late in the day and bookmakers are likely to rise to the challenge and bet fair odds.
We are saying fair odds is anything better than $1.80. His Golden Rose performance was awesome and stamped him as the star of his generation. He ran to a level that would make him a good Guineas winner there, and him aside, this doesn't look a particularly good Guineas.
A sweet barrier draw, which should leave him poised and stalking without any hustle and bustle early, under arguably the top jock in the land makes it an appealing play at the shorts.
We will stick to the Guineas caper for an each way play. Another star lines up in the Fillies heat, the Thousand Guineas, and there is no doubting that Smart Melody is good enough to win a race like this having run blistering time in the Prelude.
The little niggle would be the mile. There's a fairly positive map for her, and perhaps her speed will be telling off a steady tempo, but her stablemate El Dorado Dreaming, who ran really well behind her in the Prelude can only run well here and around $7.50 looks an irresistible each way play.
Smart Melody ran a cracking figure to win the Prelude but El Dorado Dreaming ran a cracker of her own in third and was just first up with the mile nothing but a positive for her at this point.
If Smart Melody stumbles EDD looks poised to pick up the pieces.
