The Melbourne Mail: Sandown - 2nd May 2020

3 minute read

It's off to superb Sandown for the Saturday meeting in Melbourne this week and the card has some really interesting runners littered through it.

Both Masked Crusader and Buffalo River look destined for much better races and line up in the back end of the card as well-fancied favourites. Buffalo River appeals most out of that pair but the filthy bookmakers aren't giving anything away in the early markets and so we look elsewhere for bets on the card.

The opening race is a fairly nondescript looking two-year-old race but the Corstens-trained Wegobam did enough on debut at Ballarat to think that she holds a much better chance than the $8.00 on offer in early betting implies.

She stepped slow first time out and was left poorly placed but her closing effort was very good and hints at her being every bit as smart as her fairly basic looking Sandown rivals.

The 1000m appeared on the sharp side for Wegobam and 1200m at Sandown with the cut out of the ground could work ideally for her.

For an each way play we roll on to the fith race, a 2100m handicap for the three-year-olds where a few look set to run to new peaks, creating an interesting betting race.

Craftmanship warmed up nicely late in the piece in a very slowly run race at Flemington last week and that should not have taken much out of him so the back up can be ideal now.

He ran a really nice race in the Moonee Valley Vase when stepped up to around this trip in the spring and his run last week said that he was going just as well this time around after having no luck behind Dalasan in Adelaide the run prior.

Early prices around the $10.00 mark look a good gamble for a horse who may be able to land closer from a nice draw and up in trip this time.
