The middle of the Masters Series in Perth is the sprint but it has been affected by the restrictions in place.

If form, ability and connections are anything to be followed then Trekking has to be winning the G1 Winterbottom Stakes.

Here is a horse who before a spell won a Goodwood beating Gytrash, a horse who took all before him in Sydney.

They would then finish beside each other in The Everest behind the two best sprinters in the land.

Trekking's Manikato run was also very good but this race is panels below any of that.

He now gets the freak William Pike on who had a ride in the trial last week so knows his moves and even the barrier just means he'll be off them but out of the way.

Pike will know when to get going and even though backmarkers aren't always suited to Ascot, he's got too much speed for them.

The race prior is the Tatts Cup where Spiritual Warrior comes into the race off an unconventional lead up but can surprise as he has before.

Last campaign he took on the Bunbury Cup off a two month break and then second up won there over 2200m. A Pinjarra Cup and WA Cup followed.

Off three trials he almost went around for practice in the Railway last week as he was always going to be run off his feet and was beaten some way.

This is much slower, over a better trip and while a race like the Perth Cup is the obvious target, he can improve sharply.

Suspect we'll get even better odds on the day.
