The middle pin of the G1 carnival in Adelaide is the South Australian Derby and they’ll hope the form is as good as last year’s edition.
In the 2021 renewal there is form coming from all over the place, out of Derbys and Oaks, from local lead ups and from those interstate.
Not often you'd be happy to back something who was 8th, beaten three lengths but Deepstrike is bred to be a Derby winner and now gets his chance.
By Tavistock out of a Zabeel mare, he was held up behind a wall with plenty to give and had to settle for a spot out of the placings.
The Price/Kent team left him there to prepare for the G1 and he now gets Damian Lane up in what is a very competitive Derby.
Punters seem to be finding others like the filly Personal and the Australian Derby winner Explosive Jack but each way our bloke has a great hope.
Our main bet is back to Race 5 where Appalachian is now third up in a solidly run sprint.
He finds a barrier which looks tricky but in fact with the speed on, you don't want to be searching for runs but rather blending into the race.
Off a spell, he won first up, coming from back and then was forced back to last of 16 and rattled home to be beaten just over two lengths.
He wants a dry track and that strong tempo but not so hectic that he is forced to chase from a long way out and has nothing left over the last furlong.
Think he gets that chance in this.
