Two strong efforts in stakes company see Axe well placed dropping in grade at Doomben on Saturday.

Michael Costa's four-year-old has been in fine form this campaign winning four races before stepping up to black-type level over the carnival.

Axe settled back but ran on when beaten 1.4L in the G3 BRC Sprint where he was just behind subsequent Stradbroke and Tiara winner Tofane then returned to his usual on-pace role last start, leading and fighting well to go down by half a length in the Listed Eye Liner.

He is suited back to a C6 and with good statistics at the course and distance looks tough to beat.

Roman Aureus can follow up in the next race with a second-up win.

He was an eye-catcher fresh where he found the line well over 1200m at Ipswich for a 1L second and should enjoy the longer trip.

The gelding has a good record having never missed a place at Doomben (winning four of six) and has a 50 per cent strike rate at the distance.

Roman Aureus is proven second up and is drawn to get the favours with Larry Cassidy continuing his good association with the gelding.
