Jungle Edge wins 2017 Kevin Heffernan Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Sandown-Hillside (VIC), 1300m.
Formerly thrice Group One-placed, Jungle Edge did it the hard way, leading from the jump to barely hold on for his twelfth win and third at Group Three level.
He bounced out to lead from barrier three and applied the pressure soon after. Near the last corner jockey Kevin Forrester tried to steal it and once straightened skipped clear by three. After that it was a matter of lasting the journey and throwing everything at him as Forrester got him to the post to just hold on by a fast diminishing neck.
Casino Wizard tracked the winner to the straight then kept up a relentless run, just failing to overhaul the winner in a tough effort from Thronum, who was fifth at the top of the straight and also kept up a good run to be only another head back in third. Ocean Embers tried to squeeze through along the fence but was out-finished for fourth.
