3 minute read

Sun City wins M M B.J. McLachlan Stakes Group 3 $200,000 at Doomben, 1200m.

After seconds in Listed class at his first two starts, Tony McEvoytrained colt Sun City scored a timely win here, a fortnight before the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast.

Having his second run back, he began well and settled in third place on the rails, before moving up rounding the home turn. He got to the front at the 200m and then fought back well to score a good win.

The well-supported Rome was a bit slowly away but recovered from his inside barrier (1) to settle in fifth place on the rails. He improved on straightening, went to third at the 200m and kept running on, failing by a half-length for second in a sound first-up effort at his second race start.

Krameric was fifth early on before settling in seventh place (between runners). He improved (under riding) coming to the home turn, was fifth at the 200m and kept running on to take third, his third stakes placing (without winning) in four starts to date.

Kris Lees-trained maiden filly Vinrose raced in second last place in the ten-horse field, got along the rails at the home turn and kept battling on well for (3 lengths) fourth.

The favourite, the Tony McEvoy-trained Just Zerene missed the start, was last early on before settling in eighth place (wide with cover). She fanned deep rounding the home turn and kept making good ground to finish (3.5 lengths) sixth in a promising performance at her first start.
