Residential wins Valachi Downs Breeders Stakes Group 3 $80,000 at Riccarton Park, 1600m.
Residential led soon after the start and did all the work before recording her ninth win. She was not first away but jockey Robert Hannam pushed her through one off the fence to take over inside the 1400m.
From the 1200m she was a length and half clear and going comfortably, stretching out by a further length passing the 800m. Hannam gave her breather soon after but starting the long run in she scooted clear again.
From the 300m she kept finding, was getting a little tired over the final 100m but still had a half-length up her sleeve at the line. Zabay was third (rails) past the 800m, dropped back to sixth nearing the home straight, found a split three out at the 400m then ran home well, getting up for second at the post.
Favourite Contessa Vanessa moved up to second turning in, looked the biggest danger but battled down the straight, losing second just short of the line. The first three were clear of Zentessa who had been well back before flashing home late for fourth.
