Look for a big spring from former Group 1 winner and international performer Homesman who, fresh up from second in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) 46 weeks ago, bolted in here for his fifth win (fourth stakes) in 14 starts. From a wide draw he formed a line of three coleaders then dropped into second before reaching the first corner.

A clear second along the back, he remained there past the 600m then moved up and took over inside the 300m. Kicking clear at the 200m he kept adding to his lead and at the line was bolting, away by two and half-lengths under a hold.

Mahamedeis sat sixth from the 800m, was in behind the leaders turning for home but had to switch to the inner for a run and ran on well to nab second in his last stride without any winning chance.

Best Of Days tracked the winner in third down the side, challenged three wide turning in but could not match the winner and lost second on the line.

A super effort from Surprise Baby who, from second last (rails) at the 600m, threaded between runners turning for home and finished strongly to grab fourth near the post.
