This may have only been a five-runner field but it still provided a keenly-contested finish with the consistent South Australian-trained sprinter Bold Star grabbing a narrow but game victory, his seventh win with four placings in 17 starts.

He shared the lead (with Time To Reign) at a very steady early tempo, before the pace lifted at the 400m. He briefly looked beaten, then responded well to Dwayne Dunn’s riding and fought back gamely to score by the barest of margins.

The outsider Causeway Girl travelled just behind the leading pair, switched to their inside at the 300m, held a narrow advantage at the 100m, only to be caught in the last few strides for second.

All Too Royal raced near to the leaders (closest to the near side) in fourth spot before challenging at the 100m and then fought very well for a close-up third. Time To Reign was just behind him (0.95 lengths) in fourth after running a bold race in the lead at this his first run since finishing fifth in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
