Race 4: Holy Reign

One to keep an eye on from Saturday's Randwick meeting is the Kim Waugh-trained Holy Reign.

Having not yet saluted when resuming, the six-year-old gelding was friendless in the market ($21) for his first-up assignment in the 1200m Midway.

Jumping one of the best from the widest draw and in order of landing a spot with cover, the son of Manhattan Rain was quickly restrained under the riding of apprentice Tom Sherry.

Drifting back to the tail of the field, the pair settled in the last group of horses and continued to travel there throughout.

With all but one runner ahead of him when rounding the home turn, Sherry edged his mount to the outside and promptly got stuck into his work.

It was when approaching the 200m the six-year-old began to swiftly move through his gears and eat into the deficit.

Taking good ground off his rivals, the gelding quickly swept past most of the field, before peaking on his run near the line to finish third, beaten just over a length.

Holy Reign has returned in great order and will undoubtedly take huge benefit from the run. With strong second and third-up records, it is hard to see this gelding not saluting in his next couple of starts. Must follow.
