Former No.1 AFL draft pick Cameron Rayner wasn't due to come out of contract until 2021, but Brisbane were keen to lock him away early.
Brisbane have re-signed Cameron Rayner for a further two years, tying the Victorian to the AFL club until the end of 2023.
Rayner was already contracted for next year, but Brisbane wanted to lock away the emerging star beyond that to avoid rivals swooping to nab him.
It continues a common theme for Rayner, who signed a two-year contract extension with the Lions as an 18-year-old before even making his AFL debut.
The No.1 pick from the 2017 national draft has since gone on to boot 57 goals from 63 games.
"The Brisbane Lions gave me my start in the AFL and I will be eternally grateful for the faith they showed in me," Rayner said.
"I love my teammates. We are a brotherhood and the game I have loved since I was a toddler is even better because I get to play with them.
"I would do anything for them and I know they would do the same for me.
"When I arrived in Brisbane, the club was coming off a tough few years but I immediately sensed the future would be bright.
"The standards set by the senior players and commitment to each other convinced me this was the place I wanted to call home."
The Lions will now turn their attention to Victorian Hugh McCluggage, who is due to come out of contract at the end of next year.
McCluggage was the No.3 pick in the 2016 national draft, and he has become one of the best wingmen in the AFL.
