Former Melbourne defender Ryan Ferguson has been named Richmond's new AFLW coach, replacing the dumped Tom Hunter after last season's winless campaign.
Former Melbourne defender Ryan Ferguson is Richmond's new AFLW coach and he's already had a bit of help from his wife.
Tom Hunter was dumped as senior coach after failing to guide Richmond to a win in their inaugural AFLW campaign this year.
The Tigers finished last in their conference with a 0-6 record and a percentage of 35.7.
Ferguson played 47 games for the Demons between 2003-2007.
He joined Richmond's AFL side as an assistant coach in 2015, playing a role in their 2017 and 2019 premierships and the 2019 VFL triumph.
The 39-year-old qualified schoolteacher is excited to take over the AFLW side.
Ferguson's wife - 2010 winter Olympian Bree Munro - has already set some early foundations, working closely with the Tigers players in gymnastics, body awareness, stability, and injury prevention.
Ferguson feels that program has Richmond's AFLW squad in a good space.
"The girls have put in a power of work already and ... we look forward to helping them continue on the journey," Ferguson said.
"There seems to be a lot of excitement around.
"The girls have been amazing with reaching out and messaging me to make me feel welcome and to show how excited they are and how hard they have been working over the pre-season."
Ferguson will lead his first training session next Monday night.
