Adelaide fear captain Rory Sloane's AFL season could be over after he suffered a finger injury in Sunday's 10-point defeat to Carlton.

Sloane had 23 disposals and four tackles in a typically hard-working display against the Blues at Marvel Stadium.

But coach Matthew Nicks later revealed the tough midfielder has a "high-grade tendon injury" in a finger.

"Fingers crossed on that but to be honest we're a bit concerned," Nicks said.

"We had another player with a similar injury earlier in the year - Lochie Gollant - and he missed a reasonably substantial amount of time.

"We're not exactly sure yet, we'll have to get that scanned and checked out, but it looks like there's a possibility that we may miss (Sloane) for a while."

Crows youngster Gollant had surgery in March and was sidelined for about two months.

A similar recovery time frame for Sloane could see the 31-year-old put on ice in preparation for 2022.

"That's the fear at the moment if it is the same injury," Nicks said.

"It's one of those injuries that takes time.

"He's an incredible leader on-field so we won't jump to that conclusion yet, but we'll wait and see what comes of it."

Sloane managed just 12 games last year and spent several weeks on the sidelines because of a fractured hand.

The Crows (5-9) sit 14th and are out of finals contention ahead of their meeting with flag contenders Brisbane in round 16.
