Even New Zealand cricket's Terminator is feeling the pinch in Australia.

Tireless paceman Neil Wagner was the pick of the Black Caps' bowlers as Australia racked up 467 during the second Test at the MCG on Friday.

Wagner bowled a staggering 38 overs, with a lot of short-pitch deliveries, and admits the conditions had been gruelling during the Trans-Tasman series.

"Outside of India, this is really up there with one of the hardest (physical challenges)," Wagner said.

"It's obviously pretty hot there, pretty warm. We've bowled a lot of overs during this season so far.

"It's about keeping those legs fresh, if you can buy a wicket in some sort of way."

But the 33-year-old's legion of admirers have only grown this summer with how he's gone about his cricket.

The left-armer has also made bowlers around the world envious in his ability to get Steve Smith out.

Wagner has taken the wicket of Australia's superstar in all three innings so far this series.

Australian No.6 Travis Head, who hit 114, called Wagner an "unbelievable athlete".

"He's an absolute machine. He's been very impressive the way he's gone about it," Head said.

"The long spell he bowled in Perth ... today he just didn't stop.

"We questioned who was going to bowl after tea and there was no surprises he took his cap off straight away and started up."
