Australian spinner Nathan Lyon inspected Virat Kohli's glove for a tell-tale mark after an opening-day flashpoint in the first Test.

The Indian captain was on 16, and his team 2-66, when Kohli tried to turn a short Lyon delivery to the leg-side on Thursday at Adelaide Oval.

The ball travelled through to Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine, with short-leg Matthew Wade leading an appeal for caught-behind.

Kohli was given not out and Paine opted against seeking a review.

But replays showed the ball brushed the glove of Kohli, who went on to make 74 as India finished day one at 6-233.

"Wadey says there was a sound and it looked to be in the right area," Lyon said.

"But at the end of the day, we weren't 100 per cent sure on that.

"And even talking to Virat out in the middle, he said he didn't feel anything on his glove either.

"And I even had a look at his glove and there was no pink mark on it.

"So it is what it is. Some days you get them, some days you don't."

The Australians did get one review correct, leading to the dismissal of Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 43.

Pujara edged onto his pads and Marnus Labuschagne completed a catch diving forward from leg slip.

Pujara appeared to step towards the dressing room when the umpire ruled not out, but Australia reviewed and replays showed a big inside edge.

But Paine burnt another review when Hanuma Vihari, on 12, was struck on the pads by a Mitchell Starc delivery.

Vihari was given not out and Paine reviewed that verdict with replays showing the ball clearly missing leg stump.
