A SNAPSHOT OF DAY ONE OF THE PRESIDENTS CUP

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Tiger Woods - not even with his team being hammered in the opening fourball session could the 15-time major champion be overshadowed. Paired up with Justin Thomas to nab the US's only points with six birdies in a dominant four and three win over Marc Leishman and Joaquin Niemann.

STAT OF THE DAY: The US have it all to do given that no team in Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup history have ever lost after establishing a lead of three points or more on day one.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Rookie Sungjae Im's hole-out eagle two on the par four first set the tone for his and Adam Hadwin's one-up victory over Americans Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "We're not out of it yet. It's a long week," a defiant Woods said.

CUP SUMMARY: The Internationals have a golden opportunity to win the cup for the first time since 1998 and can put one hand on the trophy with a decent display in Friday's foursomes.
