Deyen Lawson has kickstarted the PGA Tour of Australasia's return from a 10-month coronavirus hiatus, racking up 10 birdies in an opening eight-under 64 at the $125,000 Gippsland Super 6 tournament.

The Gold Coast-based Victorian had five birdies on each nine at Yallourn Golf club as he took a two-shot lead after the opening round on Thursday.

New South Welshman Dimi Papadatos and Queenslander Michael Wright head the chasing pack after posting 66s.

Former European tour star Marcus Fraser has spent more time teaching golf than playing lately but was still good enough to shoot a 67, along with Ben Eccles (Vic) and Nathan Barbieri.

Defending champion Tom Power Horan shot a 69 to be tied 11th, 14 months after he won the title.

The tournament format consists of three rounds of strokeplay followed by a final day of medal matchplay knockout golf for the top 24 players.
