Australian rower Sean Murphy has claimed gold in the lightweight men's single sculls at the World Rowing Cup in Poland.

Australia's Sean Murphy has won the men's lightweight single sculls title at the World Rowing Cup in Poznan, Poland.

The 23-year-old bagged his first senior medal, holding off Poland's Artur Mikolajczewski and European champion Peter Galambos of Hungary.

Murphy, who won both his heat and semi-final before reaching the final, was delighted with his breakthrough win at international level.

"Our race plan has changed a lot recently. I'm now a lot stronger and fitter," he told worldrowing.com.

"I had two big pushes at 500m and 1000m but I get quite excitable so I still need to calm myself down.

"You can't win from the start but you can lose it so I'm stoked with the outcome."

Fellow Australian Georgia Nesbitt took the bronze in the women's lightweight single sculls.
