World's best wait as Maui Pro on hold

3 minute read

The world's best female surfers are still waiting to start the World Surf League after another lay day was called at the Maui Pro in Hawaii.

The world's best female surfers' wait to resume world championship competition has been extended with a second lay day called at the Maui Pro in Hawaii.

The World Surf League opener is the first tour event since late 2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020 championship.

But a field including star Australians Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright have spent the past two days since the event window waiting with back-to-back lay days called.

Two-time world champion Wright said waiting for the right conditions was just part and parcel of the sport.

"We don't know when we're on, and we've got to adjust daily to what our day is going to be," Wright said.

"I wouldn't say it's easier, or I've never had it the other way, so I wouldn't know ... it's just a part of the game and you lean into that and it's quite fun.

"I don't try to keep myself sharp. I keep myself as cruisy as possible, and then an hour before, that's when we turn on."

Competition organisers are expecting back-to-back swells to hit the region inside the next 24 hours and will reconvene on Sunday at 7.30am (Monday 0330 AEDT) to assess conditions and make their next call.

When competition does resume the opening heat will feature Australian pair Nikki Van Dijk and Keely Andrew along with American Lakey Peterson.
