Gladys Berejiklian says she has overruled official advice to offer Bob Fulton's family a state funeral for one of Australia's greatest rugby league players.

The family of Australian rugby league Immortal Bob Fulton will be offered a state funeral by the NSW government.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she was overwhelmed by requests for the honour for the former Manly player who was nicknamed 'Bozo'.

"Given groundswell community support, I have overruled the official advice I received and make this offer in recognition of Mr Fulton's remarkable contribution to rugby league," she said on Tuesday.

"On behalf of the people of NSW, I extend my condolences to Mr Fulton's family and friends."

Fulton, 74, one of the sport's original four Immortals, died on Sunday after a long battle with cancer.
