South Sydney prop Thomas Burgess refuses to lament over the fact that he'll never line up alongside brother Sam in a rugby league game ever again.

Sam shocked the NRL world on Wednesday when he confirmed his retirement from the game after aggravating a chronic left shoulder injury.

"He's made a decision for himself and it's not something he's done lightly. Just support him wholly in his decision," Thomas said.

"He's been a trailblazer for myself and our family in coming out to Australia. We've got to celebrate it and smile about what he has done in the game.

"It's not the end of the world. Life goes on and I'm sure he'll be fine."

Thomas conceded Sam's move to Redfern was the catalyst for all four Burgess brothers to consider making the switch from the Super League.

George was the last of the four to make his NRL debut back in 2013, with the foursome appearing in a total six games alongside each other.

Sam was the first to fly the nest two years later, making the sensational switch to rugby union before Luke followed him out the door not long afterwards.

Sam eventually returned in late 2015, beginning a three-year spell where both he and twins George and Thomas formed the basis of an intimidating forward pack.

Thomas has learned to embrace that their dream combination is now over, which began with twin sibling George moving back to the Super League next year.

Thomas is now the last Burgess brother remaining for next season.

"That's always a harsh reality of it. We've had George obviously moving away, and Sam's now obviously going to retire," Thomas said.

"I don't want to be greedy, in that respect.

"We've had some good times. I'm just thankful for the times that we have had together as brothers playing together and I'll cherish them forever."
