A heart to heart with coach Justin Holbrook helped Tyrone Peachey lift his game this week to help Gold Coast to a 14-10 NRL win on Friday night.

The once-State of Origin representative has battled to find consistency over the past few seasons, but a dip in form recently has been most notable.

And for Holbrook, it was frankly unacceptable.

"Peach was great tonight and he had to be, he hasn't played his best the last couple of weeks and he knew that," Holbrook said after beating St George Illawarra on Friday night.

"I had a good chat to him this week and asked him to step up in a lot of areas and he did it.

"He made some breaks, scored that try Peachey style, but he's just got that competitive nature that we know is in him."

It's been a mixed bag of a season for the 29-year-old who has spent most of the season on the interchange bench.

Injuries and suspensions forced Holbrook to name him at lock on Friday, which is the first time he's been in the starting 13 since round eight when he played in the centres.

Meanwhile, Holbrook said Friday's comeback win against the Dragons is the kind of performance that he can build on heading into next season.

"It's important to get those wins, it's important as a team and as a club to win that game today and continue on that path over the next four weeks, we've got to win as many games as we can," he said.

"That's the best way to build for next year.

"It shows players how hard they've got to work, they're all absolutely exhausted but that's what it takes to win.

"That's the pleasing thing as a coach to ask so much of them and they deliver it and they get the win and they can enjoy it."
