Suncorp Stadium officials have apologised after thousands of NRL fans missed Melbourne's stunning start against Canberra due to a ticketing failure on Friday.

Suncorp Stadium officials have been forced to apologise to the thousands of fans stuck outside for Melbourne's stunning start in Friday's NRL preliminary final due to a ticketing system failure.

There were chaotic scenes in Brisbane on Friday night as thousands of supporters were left waiting, with the 37,112 fans not all seated until eight minutes after kick-off.

The Storm ran in three tries inside the first 10 minutes to set up the victory as spectators were still making their way into the venue.

A statement from the stadium said they were unsure of the cause of the issue and that it had not happened before in 17 years of the venue's operation.

"Suncorp Stadium apologises sincerely to our patrons for the failure of the stadium's ticketing system due to a national outage which created delays on entry to tonight's NRL preliminary final," a statement read.
