Melbourne Victory need polish: Muscat

Melbourne Victory are scoring for fun and flying high on the A-League ladder but Kevin Muscat says a 4-2 win over Brisbane showed his team are far from perfect.

Melbourne Victory might be absolutely flying in the A-League right now but Kevin Muscat saw areas his team need to work on during their 4-2 win over Brisbane.

Led superbly once more by star imports Keisuke Honda and Ola Toivenen, the Victory outclassed the Roar despite a chaotic first half on Friday which featured six goals, two penalties and a red card for Brisbane winger Eric Bautheac.

The win was the Victory's sixth in a row and lifts them above Perth Glory to the top of the ladder ahead of the Glory's clash with Newcastle on Sunday.

Muscat lauded his team's discipline, particularly in a second-half where the Roar hardly got a sniff of a chance, as well as some of the "excellent" football his team displayed.

The Roar's two goals however were a concern as was the home team's ability to cause concern regularly from set pieces.

"We conceded from two set-pieces, albeit the second one's an own goal, there's clearly some areas for us," he said.

"The fouls leading up to the free-kicks or the corners. That's the first part of it. Defending better. Defending as a collective."

One area that is working well for Muscat is his team's set plays.

A clever corner routine involving Honda and James Troisi deep into injury time at the end of the first half led to Kosta Barbarouses' second goal of the match against his old club - a strike which effectively ended the Roar's fight.

"Won't be able to do that one again for a while will we? It was great execution," Muscat said.
