2014 Melbourne Cup – Sertorius Withdrawn

Sertorius has been officially withdrawn from the Melbourne Cup overnight after his underwhelming Geelong Cup performance.

The Jamie Edwards-Bruce Elkington-trained gelding will not contest the Melbourne Cup and instead be spelled.

The decision was confirmed overnight with Sertorius having disappointed in his past two runs over a preferred distance.

Sertorius sat high in the Order Of Entry for the Melbourne Cup and would have been guaranteed a run in the 3200m feature event had connections elected to push on.

It is a disappointing end to his preparation after the Galileo gelding had a breakout 2013/14 season.

He won both the Bendigo Cup (2400m) and Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) during the spring before an autumn campaign which culminated with a third in the Sydney Cup (3200m).
