A 1kg penalty has helped New Zealand stayer Deane Martin move closer to securing a start in the $6 million Melbourne Cup.

Deane Martin was issued with the penalty for his win in last Saturday’s G3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) at Rosehill, a victory that took the he Bruce Wallace-trained stayer past the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup.

The five-year-old is now 63rd position in the Order of Entry for the Melbourne Cup over 3200m at Flemington on November 4.

Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager – Racing Greg Carpenter assessed Deane Martin’s Colin Stephen performance worthy of a Melbourne Cup re-handicap from 50kg to 51kg.

“The penalty for the Melbourne Cup takes Deane Martin to 7kg below the top weight Admire Rakti (58kg) but we decided not to issue a penalty for the Caulfield Cup where he has 6kg less than Admire Rakti,” Carpenter said.

Deane Martin is also 63rd on the order of entry for the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18.

The Kiwi can climb further up the order for the Cups double if he wins the G1 ATC Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday as a win in that G1 race will almost certainly see him issued with another penalty.

He will have a new rider in the Metropolitan with Chris Munce booked to replace the suspended Brenton Avdulla.

Another Kiwi stayer Sangster, trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, passed the first ballot clause for the Caulfield Cup with his improved second to the Tasmanian cult horse The Cleaner in the G3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night.

Sangster, a dual G1 winner of the Victoria Derby and Auckland Cup, is now 35th on the Caulfield Cup order with 52kg.

Sangster will now head to the G2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on October 11, seven days before the Caulfield Cup.

Like A Carousel, winner of the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) at Sandown last Saturday, satisfied the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup with that success.

He is now 68th on the Melbourne Cup order of entry with 50kg.
