No Championship Plans For Fawkner and Dandino

The Championships are not part of the 2015 plans for Group One stayers Fawkner and Dandino.

Fawkner is to be restricted to only one start in Melbourne during the autumn while Dandino will not return to training until mid-year.

Fawkner’s owner Lloyd Williams is happy to keep his 2013 Caulfield Cup winner to a limited autumn campaign in keeping with the programs he has followed with his most of his top staying horses in recent years.

Williams says he won’t be tempted to set Fawkner for the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the headline weight-for-age race of The Championships in Sydney in April despite the $4 million prizemoney.

He pointed out that Fawkner is now a 7YO and believes a light autumn will enable Fawkner to perform at his optimum level again next spring.

He also the same plans for other stable stars Foundry, Amralah, Sea Moon and The United States.

"I’m spring bent - I don't come out much to play in the autumn," Williams said. "I've brought them back into work to give them a bit of conditioning. I might run them, I might not.

"None of our horses are planned for any serious Group 1 attacks."

Williams made no mention of his plans for Almandin, the former German stayer by Monsun who landed in Australia last year and is yet to race here.

He will be worth waiting for as his German form includes a last start win over subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist in a G2 race over 2200m for his second win in just six starts.

The globetrotting Dandino is currently going through an extensive rehabilitation program under Ballarat trainer Darren Weir after suffering a suspensory injury in the spring and won’t be ready for an autumn campaign.

The days of world travel are over for Dandino, who has raced in the UK, Germany, America, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.

His best performance in Australia was his second to Fawkner in the 2013 Caulfield Cup when he was trained in the UK by Marco Botti.

Managing owner Darren Dance of Australian Bloodstock says the focus is on getting Dandino back for another crack at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the spring.
