Petrology Awesome In The Sandown Guineas

A very patient ride has seen Petrology showcase a devastating turn of foot, to come from last and claim the Group 2 Sandown Guineas.

Following up on his narrow victory in Listed company last start, the son of Fastnet Rock proved ultra impressive, when putting the race away in a few strides.

Settled last, Nick Hall peeled Petrology the widest runner entering the straight, before letting down impressively, to quickly claim Stratum Star inside the 200m.

"He showed a great turn of foot, he had to step up in grade here today," Hall said.

"I was really impressed with his performance, I wasn't sure if he had it in him, he's obviously taken it to the next level."

Threatened with being gelded, trainer David Hayes was thrilled with Petrology's performance.

"That was a win of a very good horse, a weight-for-age horse going forward I think," Hayes said.

"He's certainly not getting gelded, but still was a bit of a handful, my eldest son strapped him today and did a good job with him."

Drawing away to score by over two lengths, Hayes said he wasn't surprised by the level of performance.

"Olly [Damien Oliver] rode him as a two-year-old and said he felt like a Group 1 horse," Hayes said.

"He's not a bad judge ol'Olly."

Though yet to pencil in any concrete plans, Hayes identified the Australian Guineas as a possible future target.

"I'm really excited about him, we'll put him aside now, he stepped up on the big stage twice and he might be an Australian Guineas horse," Hayes said.
