Scissor Kick Set To Head South

Paul Messara is pleased with Scissor Kick as he’s given a let up prior to next month’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.

Scissor Kick is currently in the midst of a brief let up following a brave second in the Stan Fox Stakes behind subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win.

“He is going great. I am really pleased with him,” Messara said.

“I have given him a good freshen up since his last start and he will head down for the Coolmore.

“He is going down to Melbourne next week and will spend two weeks leading into the race in Melbourne and give him a couple of looks down the straight.

“He will have the blinkers on in the race for the first time to help sharpen him up.

Scissor Kick is a dual stakes winner and runner up in both the Golden Rose Stakes and Stan Fox Stakes.

The colt was forced to sit deep during both of those minor placings.

He won’t encounter such problems down Flemington’s Straight Six.

“I feel the straight six will be perfect for him,” Messara told Sky Sports Radio.

“He is pretty much a foolproof horse. He catches onto things pretty quickly and is an easy horse to train. One of the horse’s main attributes is he has a massive action. He has got a huge, big action and gets into a lovely rhythm.

“Being a straight race, I believe he will be able to utilise that rather than going around a bend where you can’t stretch out as cleanly as you can in the straight.”

While Scissor Kick is enjoying a freshen up, Panzer Division has been spelled with a view to the autumn after a hard run in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes

The Redoute’s Choice colt led the field around at a suicidal tempo and folded up quickly in the straight.

“He knew he had a run and he has gone to the paddock now,” Messara said.

“I don’t think Tye [Angland] knew how fast he was going.

“The horse has got a lovely big action and the cruising speed he was setting was just too high to maintain.

“When you run a tick under 1:23 for the first 1400m it is very hard to finish off. When you run those times you are going to blow up.

“He is going out for a spell. Next time in we will restrict him to 1400m to a mile with the shades on which really sharpens him up and I think that will probably be his trip.

“I’m not saying he won’t get a mile and a quarter in time but certainly next time in we will be focused on those shorter races.”
