2014 Melbourne Cup On Lucia Agenda

The odds are shortening about Caulfield Cup favorite Lucia Valentina also having a crack at the 2014 Melbourne Cup.

The classy mare heads betting at $6 with TAB.com.au for Saturday week's $3m Caulfield Cup (2400m) following her brilliant win in last Saturday's $500,000 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

That victory also promoted her to the top line of betting at $10 with Sydney Cup winner The Offer for the $6m Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 4.

Japanese visitors Bande ($12) and Admire Rakti ($14) are next in the latest market.

Trainer Kris Lees won't make a definite decision on a Melbourne Cup start for Lucia Valentina until he sees how she performs on Saturday week, but has given a clear indication that the Flemington "two-miler"

is definitely on the agenda.

"If she wins the Caulfield Cup or at least runs the 2400m strongly, then I'd be keen to give her the chance to win the Melbourne Cup," Lees said today.

"She has come through the Turnbull Stakes really well, and is nice and bright. "It's all systems go for Saturday week."

Lucia Valentina is being stabled at Caulfield, and will have another look at the course proper on Saturday morning.

Lees yesterday paid the third acceptance fee for the Caulfield Cup, and also the first acceptance fee for the Melbourne Cup.

He has also kept Lucia Valentina in the $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25 as a precaution. But the Caulfield Cup is her immediate priority.

Lucia Valentina would put herself in illustrious company should she add the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups to her Turnbull triumph.

Bart Cummings' outstanding mare Let's Elope won all three in 1991.

She carried 50kg in the Turnbull and then 48.5kg at Caulfield and 51kg at Flemington.

Champion mare Makybe Diva won the 2005 Turnbull with 56.5kg and her third Melbourne Cup with 58kg. She did not contest the Caulfield Cup that year, but instead won the wfa Cox Plate a week later with 55.5kg.

Meanwhile, Lees is sending European import Slow Pace to Melbourne to join Lucia Valentina.

He will also run at Caulfield on Saturday week, in the $150,000 Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m).

Following a first-up fifth under 59kg topweight to subsequent Epsom Handicap placegetter Hooked in the Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Broadmeadow on September 17, Slow Pace finished fourth to Moriarty in last Saturday's wfa Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick.

"I thought he had every chance, but he was second-up and the run has brought him on," Lees said.

"He will definitely be fitter for the Caulfield race."
